26. DeKalb Township/DeKalb County 25,000-50,000

Description: DeKalb Township hosted its 3rd Annual Senior Vehicle Safety Check. Through partnerships with DeKalb Police, TRIAD, Kishwaukee College, NAPA Auto Cares, and various senior service providers, we had over 60 vehicles pass through our garage. As part of the check, students at Kishwaukee College’s automotive repair program perform a 30-point inspection in the cars to check for any automotive problems and are given a list of any repairs that may need to be made. Additionally, we hand out a list of common scams that are used against senior citizens involving auto repairs. Individuals must be 60 or older to participate in this free program.

Senior Center “Act of Kindness” Thank You
Message: This past June, a gentleman, wishing to remain anonymous, came into the Hanover Township Senior Center offering to pay for the first 25 lunches for the next day’s customers at the Township’s Stars N' Stripes Café. The residents receiving the free lunches were so appreciative they took some photos to share with our community to thank the man for his generous act of kindness. The café is located in the Township Senior Center in Bartlett and offers residents a choice of two, freshly made, nutritious meals each day. The café is open from Monday through Friday and also offers a great opportunity for residents to volunteer. Volunteers help staff the café by taking orders, preparing plates, and delivering them to the patrons at their tables.

Adventure Maine Township Summer Camp
Message: Our Adventure Maine Township Summer Camp program for at risk youth ages 8-13 from low income families has offered two 2-week sessions each summer for the past twelve years. Our day camp provides a supportive and structured environment where children can improve their social skills while being exposed to new activities they may not otherwise be able to experience. This photo was taken on a trip to a working farm where campers learned about life on a farm and had up close and personal interactions with farm animals and even caught a chicken (much to their delight!).
