The Township Officials of Illinois (TOI) lost a champion, a friend, a forever supporter of the government closest to the people on February 11, 2026. Danny Hanning from Huntsville Township Schuyler County, joined the TOI Board of Directors in 2008 serving on the Executive Board in 2026 through his Presidency in 2025. He led us through the pandemic in a time when townships across Illinois became an integral part of the response. He was a force behind the Associations mission, goals, and objectives. Danny was unique in how he carried himself, his background, and his demeanor. He was at every conference, education event, Lobby Day, and even traveled to Washington D.C., to lobby Congress on the value of local government and Illinois’ perspective. He was responsible for getting TOI through the pandemic and virtual communication. He was a flip phone type of guy, and we converted him to texting upon necessity. Danny was a true testament that you should never judge a book by its cover. He led not only the Township Highway Commissioners of Illinois but the TOI Board of Directors. His dedication and commitment to our cause went beyond expectation. It is important to recognize that we are all part of learning from history—we observe history through living it and ultimately become part of it. May Danny’s history carry on with the new generations of local government leaders benefiting the rural existence of township government.
