How You Can Help
Makanda Township Lt and Fire Investigator Brian Pierce (517) was killed Wednesday, August 4, 2021, while serving as a police officer for the Brooklyn, IL Police Department. He was 24 years old. The Makanda Township board established the Brian R. Pierce, Jr. 517 Memorial Fund in his honor. Donations to this account will be used to fund training opportunities for Makanda Township Fire Department volunteers in good standing. Brian had invested many hours in training himself as a fire investigator as well as training new recruits. The Fire Department hopes to maintain the fund through donations and fundraisers.
Checks can be made to "Makanda Township" with Brian Pierce Memorial Fund in the memo line or "Brian Pierce Memorial Fund" and mailed to Makanda Township, 2767 Springer Ridge Road, Carbondale, IL 62902.
A message regarding COVID-19:
Dear Makanda Township residents,
As the COVID-19 virus continues, I’m asking if anyone healthy is willing to pick up food or medicines for those who self-quarantine in our township. There won’t be any reimbursement for gas, time, etc., and you’ll be on your own insurance if anything goes awry. I’m asking on behalf of those in our township who are unable to be out or don’t believe it’s safe for them to be in public and have no one else to bring essential items to them. Please email me at supermakanda@hotmail.com with your name and phone # if you’re willing to volunteer. Please put “Willing to Volunteer” in the subject line.
For those Makanda Township residents who self-quarantine: If you get in a pinch and need someone to pick up food or medicine, please email me at supermakanda@hotmail.com with your name, phone #, address, what you need brought to you and when it will be available for pick-up. I suggest using a debit/credit card to pay in advance for items that are ordered so that cash doesn’t have to be handled or reimbursed. Please allow at least 24 hours for a volunteer to be available if at all possible. Please put “Need Delivery Assistance” in the subject line when you email me.
This is an experiment, but one that I’m hopeful will work to help our Makanda Township neighbors.
