DOT Reduces Burden on Local Governments

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the Obama Administration is eliminating 46 regulations on traffic signs to provide more flexibility for state and local governments, including allowing communities to replace traffic signs when they are worn out rather than requiring signs to be replaced by a specific date.

The Illinois Department Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) is encouraging Illinois communities large and small to submit their entries for the 2012 Governor’s Hometown Awards (GHTA) competition. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the annual event which recognizes those volunteers whose hard work and dedication greatly improve their communities. The deadline to submit applications for consideration is July 16, 2012.

On-Line Local Government Training for Teachers

University of Illinois Extension and the Partnership for Local Government Education announces the release of the online teacher certification training for the “Tomorrow’s Leaders: Understanding Illinois Local Government” curriculum. Teachers seeking local government resources should check out the curriculum and online teacher certification program available at no cost to teachers or their schools, beginning March 5, which coincides with Illinois Local Government Week. Originally geared toward high school students, the “Tomorrow’s Leaders” curriculum has been updated to include grades six through 12.

Open Meetings Act Electronic Requirements

All elected or appointed township officials are now required to complete the Open Meetings Act training online. This law (P.A. 97-0504) is effective January 1, 2012 but officials have until January 1, 2013 to complete the training. If a person fills a vacancy or is appointed after January 1, 2013, they have 90 days to complete the training after taking the oath of office (if an oath is required). If you are a member of a public body or committee in addition to your role as an elected official or you hold more than one appointed/elected position, you are only required to complete the training once. The certificate of completion can be filed with each public body of which you are a member. Completion of this training qualifies for one hour of voluntary education credit through TOI; the official is responsible for reporting the credit.
