What consists of more than 8,400 parts and nearly 200,000 people but is rarely studied in Illinois public schools?
It's local government!
Tomorrow's Leaders: Understanding Illinois Local Government is a curriculum being used in Illinois high schools. The curriculum attempts to fill a gap in civic education for teachers who
- share our commitment to educating today's youth
- want to provide young people with learning opportunities
- want to foster their student's development as citizens
The Partnership for Local Government Education is a collaboration formed to increase interest and involvement in local government in Illinois. The mission is to further the understanding of the role the local government plays in our individual and collective lives, and appreciation for the depth and breadth of services that local government provides its constituents.
The curriculum and accompanying student handbooks are provided at no cost to currently active Illinois high school teachers who participate in a training workshop. There is generally a small registration fee to cover instruction costs. Curriculum units include: Introduction to Local Government, Who's Who in Local Government, Local Government Finance, Physical Infrastructure, Law Enforcement and the Court System, Local Government Services, Public Safety and Being a Good Citizen.
